When I was married to an F-16 pilot he was having an average day at work on a training mission above the North Sea with his wingman alongside. Suddenly, his RPM’s went down. He followed his procedural checklist and the RPM’s kept falling. His wingman then informed him that he had a flame out; flames were shooting out of the single engine that powers the fighter jet. He then decreased his altitude and prepared to eject. He did so and splashed down into the frigid North Sea of January. He was safely retrieved, and after a brief hospital check, was returned to the squadron to much fanfare. He flew again the next day. The beautiful, elegant F-16, however, was at the bottom of the North Sea. It was quickly fished out and examined. It turned out that a tiny bolt had come loose and had been thrown into the engine causing all the problems.

What I see in this is the bolt is a particulate and while there was no way to foresee that particular bolt coming loose I would bet my life that every maintenance chief in the Dutch Air Force has been checking that bolt daily since!

So, the lesson is, don’t let a particulate be the bolt in your engine! Use Texwipe products in your clean room process and keep flying!
