Phenol / Phenolic Cleanroom Disinfectants

Broad-spectrum surface disinfectants for routine microbial control in critical environments.

Phenolic disinfectants are a long-established cleanroom chemistry used for routine disinfection of hard, non-porous surfaces when broad, dependable kill is required. In controlled environments, phenolics are valued for strong activity against vegetative bacteria, many fungi, and some viruses, and they are commonly validated as part of a disinfectant rotation program alongside alcohols and periodic sporicides. Their formulations often include surfactants, allowing “clean-while-disinfecting” performance on stainless, epoxy, vinyl, and other cleanroom-ready surfaces.

Because phenolics are not the right fit for every material or organism, facilities typically reserve them for defined zones and SOP steps: they are not sporicidal, may be limited against some non-enveloped viruses, and can interact with certain plastics or porous materials, so material compatibility review and validated contact time are essential. As with all phenolic chemistries, follow the SDS for PPE and handling controls.
