SCHOTT KL 2500 LED Fiber Optic Light Source (LED Illuminator, 100–240V)

The SCHOTT KL 2500 LED is SCHOTT’s high-performance “cold light” fiber optic illuminator for stereo microscopy and macroscopy in life science and industrial inspection environments. It delivers intense, stable LED illumination through KL-Series light guides, providing high brightness without the heat load and lamp-replacement cycle associated with traditional halogen sources.

Platform note: This is a KL-Series illuminator. Output is specified as 1,000 lm at the light guide end when used with KL light guides with 9 mm active diameter.

Ordering Options (choose at checkout)
  • Power cord (required): US (400.052), EU (400.051), CH (400.053), or UK (400.054)
  • Optional KL-Series light guide: NONE, 154.101 (Single rigid gooseneck / 600mm), 155.100 (Single flexible / 1000mm), 154.202 (Double rigid gooseneck / 600mm), 155.204 (Double flexible / 1000mm), 157.410 (Annular ring light Ø 58mm), 157.420 (Annular ring light Ø 66mm)

Selection tip: If you need “set-and-stay” aiming for hands-on inspection, pick a rigid gooseneck. If you need reach around fixtures, pick a flexible guide. For shadow-minimized viewing, consider a ring light.

About the Manufacturer:

SCHOTT is a multinational, technology-based group that develops and manufactures specialty glass, advanced materials, components, and systems used across industrial inspection, electronics, and life-science workflows. In microscopy illumination, SCHOTT’s modular approach pairs dedicated light sources with interchangeable KL-series light guides (goosenecks, flexible guides, and ring lights) so teams can standardize lighting geometry, reduce operator-to-operator variation, and maintain repeatable inspection conditions.

Notes: Light output at the work surface depends heavily on your light guide type, active diameter, tip distance, and geometry. For repeatable inspection, document the approved setup (guide type, distance, intensity setting, and any shutter/use pattern).

The Technical Vault: SCHOTT KL 2500 LED (KL-Series High-Performance Fiber Optic Illuminator)

Vault purpose: How to pick the right KL light guide, how to standardize brightness and geometry for repeatable inspection, and which KL 2500 features matter most (dimming sensitivity, shutter, and stability with goosenecks).

1) What “cold light” changes in real work

A fiber optic illuminator keeps the light engine remote from the work surface. That matters when you need bright illumination but want to minimize heat near sensitive parts, adhesives, coatings, or operator touch zones. The KL 2500 LED delivers high output through KL light guides and supports continuous dimming (0–100%) to tune contrast without changing geometry.

2) Output reality: lumen specs live at the light-guide end

The KL 2500 is specified at 1,000 lm at the light guide end for KL guides with 9 mm active diameter. In practice, delivered illuminance at the part depends on:

  • Guide type: gooseneck vs flexible vs ringlight
  • Active diameter: up to 9 mm maximum
  • Tip distance: closer usually increases intensity but can increase glare/hotspots
  • Angle (geometry): the #1 lever for defect visibility
3) Choosing the right KL accessory (fast decision guide)
  • Single rigid gooseneck (154.101): best when one controllable light vector is enough and you want “set-and-stay” aiming.
  • Double rigid gooseneck (154.202): best for “rake + fill” (texture/defect reveal + shadow control) from one source.
  • Flexible guides (155.100 / 155.204): best when you must route around fixtures or need longer reach; expect a little more setup variability vs rigid guides.
  • Ring lights (157.410 / 157.420): best for shadow-minimized viewing and documentation; often preferred on reflective or complex geometries where dual-gooseneck hotspots are distracting.
4) Standardization checklist (what to record for repeatability)
  • Light guide model: (e.g., 154.101 vs 154.202) and any ringlight diameter.
  • Distance: tip-to-part (or ringlight-to-part) measurement range.
  • Angles / clock positions: especially for goosenecks (e.g., 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock).
  • Intensity level: record the brightness setpoint used for evaluation.
  • Mode / sensitivity: if you use fine vs coarse tuning, note it in the work instruction.
  • Use of shutter: whether the electronic shutter is used between steps to prevent unintended exposure/heating.

Practical tip: Take a reference photo of the approved gooseneck geometry and keep it in the SOP. It prevents drift after cleaning, maintenance, or operator changeover.

5) Features that matter for inspection workflows
  • Continuous 0–100% dimming for contrast control without moving the guide.
  • Three sensitivity modes (fine/standard/coarse) for fast setup + precise final tuning.
  • Electronic shutter to quickly block light output without changing intensity settings.
  • USB control when you want PC-driven repeatability or integration into a bench process.
  • Low-noise fan cooling and long LED life (50,000 h) for stability and reduced maintenance.
  • Extra ballast + small footprint to keep the unit stable when goosenecks are repositioned.
