SOSCleanroom
Overview

The BIOLUX 30 is a 30W germicidal air and surface irradiating strip fixture engineered to irradiate small areas and exposed surfaces with direct UV-C in properly controlled environments. This unit is specified for 254nm germicidal operation and is commonly used where access to the UV treatment zone can be restricted through shielding, interlocks, and/or facility SOPs. SKU: BIOLUX 30 (40-1109). Lamp included.

Key Highlights
  • Mfg. Ordering Code: 40-1109
  • UV Output: 8.3W rated at 254nm
  • Fixture Type: Germicidal air & surface irradiating preheat strip fixture
  • Construction: Polished chrome
  • Dimensions: 37-1/2" L x 2-5/8" W x 3-1/2" H
  • Rated Average Lamp Life: 6,000 hours
  • What’s Included: Fixture + germicidal lamp
Typical Applications
  • Laboratories
  • Clean rooms and controlled environments (application dependent)
  • Operating rooms and clinical support spaces (when specified by facility protocols)
Safety Note
UV-C is hazardous and can cause serious eye and skin injury. Protect eyes and skin when operating germicidal lamps. In OEM and facility applications, equipment should be designed to completely screen or filter UV-C radiation, and access to the irradiation zone should be controlled via shielding, interlocks, timers, and/or SOPs.

Germicidal UV: Why 254nm is Used
Germicidal UV (often called UVGI) reduces microbial contamination by causing photochemical damage to DNA and/or RNA. When microorganisms absorb UV-C, replication is inhibited, which is why UV-C is widely used as a disinfection technology in engineered air, water, and surface systems.
In practice, performance is dose-driven. The core metric is delivered dose (also called fluence): UV intensity at the target multiplied by exposure time. Fixture wattage and UV output support capability, but geometry and operating conditions control results.
Engineering: How Germicidal Fixtures Produce UV-C
Most germicidal fixtures use a low-pressure mercury discharge lamp. The ballast initiates and controls an electrical discharge through mercury vapor; excited mercury emits strong ultraviolet radiation near 254nm. The fixture positions the lamp to deliver UV into a defined treatment zone, where distance, reflectivity, and air movement determine the dose at the target.
  • Ballast + start method matter: preheat operation warms electrodes before full discharge, improving starting reliability and reducing electrode stress.
  • Thermal operating window: airflow and mounting can change lamp temperature and UV output; validate performance in the installed configuration.
  • Output depreciation: UV output declines with operating hours and fouling; hours tracking and planned replacement preserve performance.
Why Strip Fixtures Are Application-Sensitive
Strip fixtures are designed for localized, direct irradiation. That makes them effective in defined treatment zones, but also means results depend heavily on installation details.
  • Line-of-sight: UV is blocked by shadowing; surfaces not directly exposed receive little to no dose.
  • Distance sensitivity: intensity drops quickly with distance; placement and angle are primary engineering variables.
  • Air treatment: outcomes depend on residence time in the UV field and airflow patterns through the irradiation zone.

Safety & Controls (Non-Negotiable)
UV-C is hazardous. Direct-irradiation fixtures should only be used with engineered and administrative controls appropriate to the installation: shielding, restricted access, timers/key controls, interlocks where applicable, warning signage, and documented procedures.
  • Never view an operating UV source directly outside of a rated enclosure.
  • Control the treatment zone: operate during unoccupied periods or with protective measures mandated by your facility.
  • Environmental handling: follow site policy and local regulations for mercury-containing lamp disposal.
Cleanroom Considerations
  • Controlled changeout: minimize packaging debris and particulates; treat as a minor maintenance event.
  • Low-lint handling: stage clean nitrile gloves and cleanroom-appropriate lint-free wipes prior to service.
  • Program management: document operating hours and service dates; incorporate UV maintenance into SOPs.
SOSCleanroom Support Note
SOSCleanroom (Specialty Optical Systems, Inc.) has supported specialty lighting distribution partnerships for 40+ years. For UV systems, best outcomes come from matching fixture identifiers (e.g., BIOLUX 30 / 40-1109) and validating performance at the application level (delivered dose).
