Why the Blue Mirror Lens Matters

The Nemesis VL 20471 uses a blue-mirror lens treatment designed to reduce overall brightness and glare in bright work environments. The reflective exterior layer helps reduce the amount of intense visible light reaching the wearer while providing a darker viewing condition than clear safety glasses.

This lens configuration is especially useful around sunlit pavement, concrete, glass, roofing materials, vehicle surfaces, polished equipment, sheet metal, loading yards, transportation facilities, and other bright or reflective environments. Because the lens is not polarized, it should not be represented as providing the same directional reflected-glare reduction as polarized safety eyewear.

  • Helps reduce brightness in outdoor and high-light environments
  • Helps manage glare from pavement, vehicles, glass, metal, roofing, and industrial equipment
  • Provides a darker viewing condition than clear safety glasses
  • Offers a reflective blue exterior appearance
  • Combines mirror brightness reduction with anti-fog and scratch-resistant treatments
  • Supports exterior and indoor/outdoor transitional work where adequate lighting is maintained
KleenVision™ Anti-Fog Performance

Fogging occurs when warm, moisture-containing air contacts a cooler lens surface and condenses into small droplets that scatter light. Fog can develop during temperature transitions, strenuous activity, high humidity, or use with masks, respirators, hoods, and protective garments that direct warm air toward the eyewear.

The blue-mirror lens incorporates KleenVision™ premium anti-fog technology. Ansell states that the coating is engineered to provide anti-fog performance 100 times greater than the ANSI Z87.1-2020 “X” mark requirement and exceeds the EN 166 “N” test for resistance to fogging.

  • Helps maintain visibility in humid working conditions
  • Supports clearer vision during temperature transitions
  • Helps reduce fogging associated with masks, respirators, hoods, and face coverings
  • Can reduce repeated eyewear removal, wiping, and adjustment
  • Helps limit fog-related interruptions during physically demanding tasks
  • Supports more consistent use of required eye protection
Mirror, Anti-Fog and Scratch-Resistant Lens System

The Nemesis VL 20471 combines multiple lens technologies in one protective configuration. The blue mirror treatment helps reduce brightness, the KleenVision™ coating helps limit fogging, and the scratch-resistant hardcoat helps preserve usable optical clarity during routine industrial use.

Lens Feature Practical Benefit
Blue mirror finish Helps reduce visible brightness and general glare in bright exterior and high-reflectance environments
KleenVision™ anti-fog coating Helps maintain visibility during humidity, temperature changes, exertion, and mask or respirator use
Scratch-resistant hardcoat Helps protect usable lens clarity from routine contact and light abrasion
Polycarbonate construction Combines low weight, impact performance, optical transparency, and ultraviolet filtration
99.9% UVA, UVB, and UVC filtration Helps reduce occupational ultraviolet exposure during outdoor use
Frameless No-Brow Design

The Nemesis VL uses an extra-lightweight frameless design without a conventional upper brow bar. Removing the upper frame reduces bulk above the lens, supports upward peripheral vision, and can reduce interference with hard-hat suspension systems and other headborne PPE.

  • Helps improve upward peripheral vision
  • Reduces upper-frame visual obstruction
  • Helps limit interference with hard-hat suspension components
  • Provides a lower-profile fit beneath hoods and head coverings
  • Reduces overall eyewear weight for extended use
  • Supports a broad viewing area without a heavy conventional frame
Wraparound Coverage and Peripheral Protection

The 8.25 base-curve polycarbonate lens follows the general contours of the face and extends coverage around the sides of the eyes. This wraparound geometry supports broader peripheral protection than a flatter conventional spectacle lens while maintaining a lightweight, low-profile design.

Design Feature Practical Benefit
8.25 base-curve lens Extends protective coverage around the sides of the wearer’s face
Frameless construction Reduces visual obstruction and overall eyewear weight
No-brow geometry Supports upward vision and helps reduce hard-hat suspension interference
Soft ventilated nosepiece Supports comfort, perspiration management, and fit stability
Comfort Touch temple tips Help minimize pressure and reduce eyewear movement during extended wear
Comfort, Fit and Sweat Management

The flexible nosepiece is designed to provide soft contact against the wearer’s nose, while a ventilation notch helps channel perspiration away from the eyes. Flexible temple arms with Comfort Touch tips help reduce pressure and keep the glasses securely positioned during routine work.

  • Soft nose contact helps reduce concentrated pressure points
  • Ventilation notch helps direct perspiration away from the eyes
  • Flexible nosepiece supports fit across a range of facial profiles
  • Flexible temple arms accommodate a range of head dimensions
  • Comfort Touch tips help reduce pressure during extended shifts
  • Soft-grip contact surfaces help limit eyewear slippage
  • Included neck cord keeps the glasses accessible when temporarily removed
Impact Protection and UV Filtration

Ansell identifies the Nemesis VL product family as manufactured to comply with ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 and as Z87+ high-velocity impact rated. The polycarbonate lens also filters 99.9% of UVA, UVB, and UVC radiation.

The Z87+ designation confirms high-impact performance under the applicable spectacle requirements, but it does not make the glasses suitable for every eye hazard. Chemical splash, fine dust, aerosols, welding radiation, laser radiation, molten materials, and full-face hazards may require different or additional protection.

Lighting and Lens Selection Guidance

Blue-mirror lenses reduce incoming visible light and should be selected according to the lighting conditions present throughout the work area. A lens that is appropriate for bright exterior work may reduce visibility in warehouses, shaded process spaces, vehicle interiors, tunnels, stairwells, or nighttime operations.

  • Confirm adequate task illumination before approving the lens
  • Evaluate all indoor and outdoor transition points
  • Confirm that labels, signs, colors, signals, alarms, and inspection details remain visible
  • Do not use for nighttime work unless specifically approved by the site hazard assessment
  • Provide a clear-lens alternative where workers must enter dimly illuminated areas
  • Consider polarized eyewear where directional reflected-glare control is required
Controlled Environment Considerations

The low-profile design and anti-fog coating may support controlled work where visibility, reduced eyewear adjustment, and compatibility with masks or hoods are important. However, industrial safety certification does not establish sterility, cleanroom classification, low particle release, low outgassing, or disinfectant compatibility.

  • Evaluate the eyewear under the facility’s contamination-control strategy before use
  • Confirm that the mirror tint does not interfere with inspection or color-recognition tasks
  • Assign eyewear by employee or controlled area when practical
  • Handle the glasses by the temples rather than the coated lens
  • Complete fit adjustments before entering the critical work zone
  • Do not place eyewear directly on benches, carts, gowning seats, or critical surfaces
  • Do not transfer eyewear between uncontrolled and controlled areas without approved cleaning
  • Use only facility-approved cleaners and compatible low-lint wipes
  • Inspect for haze, residue, mirror damage, coating damage, scratches, and retained contamination
Cleaning, Inspection and Storage

Clean the lens using an approved optical cleaner, mild soap and water, or another validated facility procedure. Remove loose abrasive particles before wiping and use a soft, non-abrasive optical tissue, microfiber cloth, or approved cleanroom wiper.

  • Do not dry wipe when dust, grit, or metal particles are present
  • Do not use abrasive shop towels, scouring materials, or rough paper products
  • Avoid unapproved solvents and aggressive disinfectants
  • Do not aggressively polish the mirror or anti-fog treatments
  • Inspect the lens, temples, mounting points, nosepiece, cord, and safety markings before each use
  • Replace glasses with cracks, chips, deep scratches, distortion, permanent haze, coating damage, or insecure fit
  • Remove the eyewear from service following a significant impact
  • Store in a clean, cool, and dry location away from direct sunlight and chemical vapors
  • Use a protective case, sleeve, or designated compartment to reduce coating and lens damage
Important Use Limitations

The KleenGuard Nemesis VL 20471 is designed for general occupational impact protection, brightness reduction, fog resistance, and bright-light industrial use. It is not a sealed chemical-splash goggle, dust-tight goggle, gas-tight protector, polarized lens, welding lens, laser-protective device, electrical arc-flash protector, or substitute for a face shield where full-face protection is required. The blue-mirror lens may not provide sufficient visible-light transmission for dim interiors, nighttime work, or poorly illuminated areas. Final selection must be based on the employer’s documented hazard assessment and verification that the lens tint provides adequate task visibility.

Packaging Clarification

The SOSCleanroom selling quantity for SKU 20471 is 12 safety glasses per case. Manufacturer or distributor logistics documents may reference larger master-carton quantities. Those larger shipping quantities should not be presented as the customer purchase quantity unless confirmed by the active SOSCleanroom inventory and purchasing record.

Blue Mirror Lens Technology

The blue-mirror lens incorporates a reflective exterior treatment intended to reduce the amount of intense visible light reaching the wearer’s eyes. This helps manage brightness and glare in outdoor, high-light, and reflective industrial environments.

Common glare sources include pavement, concrete, vehicle surfaces, roofing materials, glass, polished equipment, sheet metal, water, loading areas, and sunlit exterior structures. The mirror finish can improve visual comfort under bright conditions, but the lens is not polarized and should not be represented as providing directional glare filtration equivalent to polarized eyewear.

  • Helps reduce brightness in outdoor and high-light work areas
  • Helps limit glare from reflective industrial surfaces
  • Provides a darker viewing condition than clear safety eyewear
  • Offers a reflective blue exterior appearance
  • Combines glare reduction with anti-fog and scratch-resistant performance
  • Supports outdoor and transitional work when available lighting remains adequate
Mirror Lens Versus Polarized Lens

Mirror coatings and polarized filters address glare differently. A mirror coating reflects a portion of incoming visible light and reduces overall brightness. A polarized filter selectively reduces strongly oriented reflected glare from surfaces such as water, pavement, glass, and metal.

Lens Type Primary Function
Blue mirror lens Reduces general visible brightness through a reflective exterior treatment
Polarized lens Reduces directional reflected glare using an internal polarizing filter
20471 configuration Blue mirror and non-polarized; should not be marketed as polarized eyewear
KleenVision™ Anti-Fog Technology

Lens fogging occurs when warm, moisture-containing air contacts a cooler lens and condenses into microscopic droplets. These droplets scatter light, reduce contrast, obscure fine detail, and can encourage workers to remove or repeatedly adjust their safety glasses.

The Nemesis VL 20471 uses KleenVision™ premium anti-fog technology intended to reduce the accumulation of vision-obscuring moisture. Ansell states that KleenVision™ is engineered to provide anti-fog performance 100 times greater than the ANSI Z87.1-2020 “X” mark requirement and exceeds the EN 166 “N” fog-resistance test.

  • Helps maintain clearer vision in humid environments
  • Supports visibility during temperature transitions
  • Helps manage fogging associated with masks, respirators, hoods, and face coverings
  • Can reduce repeated eyewear removal, wiping, and adjustment
  • Supports more consistent use of required eye protection
  • Helps limit task interruptions caused by condensation on the lens
Anti-Fog Performance Limitations

Anti-fog treatment reduces the likelihood and duration of fogging but does not guarantee completely fog-free performance under every condition. Results can be affected by temperature difference, humidity, physical exertion, airflow, respirator exhaust, contamination, cleaning technique, coating wear, and chemical exposure.

  • Do not assume anti-fog treatment eliminates the need for proper fit and airflow management
  • Check mask position, respirator valves, hood fit, and airflow direction when repeated fogging occurs
  • Do not apply household anti-fog chemicals unless validated for the coated lens
  • Do not aggressively polish or scrub the anti-fog surface
  • Replace the glasses if the coating becomes damaged, hazy, uneven, or ineffective
  • Use only approved cleaning materials and procedures
Combined Lens Protection System

The 20471 lens combines several performance functions in one polycarbonate structure. Each treatment addresses a different workplace requirement and should be maintained through appropriate cleaning, handling, and storage.

Lens Feature Practical Benefit
Blue mirror treatment Helps reduce overall brightness and glare in high-light conditions
KleenVision™ anti-fog coating Helps limit visibility loss from condensed moisture
Scratch-resistant hardcoat Helps preserve usable optical clarity during routine industrial handling
Polycarbonate construction Combines low weight, impact resistance, optical transparency, and UV filtration
99.9% UVA / UVB / UVC filtration Helps reduce ultraviolet exposure during exterior occupational use
Polycarbonate Lens Construction

Polycarbonate is widely used in industrial safety eyewear because it combines low weight, impact performance, optical transparency, and ultraviolet filtration. Its low mass supports prolonged use and helps reduce pressure compared with heavier lens materials.

Polycarbonate can still be damaged by deep abrasion, incompatible solvents, excessive heat, impact, and improper storage. The scratch-resistant hardcoat improves durability but does not make the lens scratch-proof.

Frameless No-Brow Design

The Nemesis VL uses an extra-lightweight frameless design that removes the conventional upper brow frame found on many safety spectacles. The resulting low-profile construction helps reduce visual obstruction, minimize eyewear weight, and limit interference with hard-hat suspension systems and other headborne PPE.

  • Reduces upper-frame visual obstruction
  • Supports improved upward peripheral vision
  • Helps reduce interference with hard-hat suspension components
  • Provides a lower-profile fit beneath hoods and head coverings
  • Reduces overall product weight for extended wear
  • Provides a broad viewing area without a heavy conventional frame
Base Curve and Wraparound Coverage

The 8.25 base-curve lens follows the general contours of the face and extends around the sides of the eyes. This high-wrap geometry provides broader peripheral coverage than a flatter conventional spectacle lens.

Actual coverage depends on the wearer’s facial dimensions, lens position, temple fit, nosepiece contact, head movement, compatibility with other PPE, and the direction and energy of the workplace hazard. Wraparound spectacles should not be treated as sealed goggles.

Soft Nosepiece and Sweat Management

The Nemesis VL uses a soft, flexible nosepiece intended to improve contact comfort, help maintain eyewear position, and reduce concentrated pressure on the nose. A ventilation notch helps direct perspiration away from the eyes and supports airflow around the nose bridge.

  • Soft contact surface helps reduce pressure points
  • Flexible design accommodates a range of facial profiles
  • Ventilation notch supports perspiration management
  • Anti-slide contact helps limit downward eyewear movement
  • Low-profile construction supports extended use
  • Nosepiece condition should be included in pre-use inspection
Comfort Touch Temple System

Flexible temple arms with Comfort Touch soft-grip tips help minimize contact pressure and keep the glasses securely positioned. Temple flexibility supports fit across a range of head dimensions while reducing rigid pressure during extended use.

  • Flexible temples adapt to a range of head shapes
  • Soft-grip tips help maintain stable positioning
  • Reduced contact pressure supports prolonged wear
  • Low-profile temples can improve compatibility with hard hats and hoods
  • Temple position should be evaluated when earmuffs or respirators are worn
  • Included neck cord helps retain the glasses when temporarily removed
Lighting and Visibility Assessment

Blue-mirror lenses reduce incoming visible light and therefore require a lighting assessment before use. A lens suitable for bright exterior work may reduce visibility in shaded spaces, warehouses, vehicle interiors, stairwells, tunnels, process areas, or nighttime operations.

  • Confirm adequate task illumination before approving the lens
  • Evaluate all indoor and outdoor transition points
  • Confirm that colors, labels, signals, alarms, and inspection details remain visible
  • Do not use for nighttime work unless specifically approved by the site hazard assessment
  • Provide a clear-lens alternative where workers enter dimly lit areas
  • Evaluate glare conditions separately from basic impact-protection requirements
Recommended Applications and Industries
  • Outdoor manufacturing and production operations
  • Construction and exterior site inspection
  • Facility and exterior building maintenance
  • Oil, gas, petrochemical, and energy operations
  • Warehousing, loading docks, shipping yards, and material handling
  • Transportation, fleet, railway, and roadway work
  • Utility installation, inspection, and maintenance
  • Equipment operation and servicing
  • Work around pavement, vehicles, glass, roofing, polished metal, and reflective equipment
  • Humid or temperature-variable work environments
  • Tasks requiring masks, respirators, hoods, or protective headgear
  • General industrial eye protection where the mirror tint is appropriate for available lighting
PPE Compatibility and Fit Assessment

Safety glasses should be evaluated as part of the complete PPE system. Hard hats, respirators, face shields, hearing protection, masks, hoods, and protective garments can alter eyewear position, redirect warm air, reduce protective coverage, or create pressure points.

  • Confirm that hard-hat suspension systems do not displace the glasses
  • Ensure temple arms do not interfere with tight-fitting respirator seals
  • Check for leakage or pressure beneath earmuff cushions
  • Verify that masks and respirators do not direct excessive warm air toward the lens
  • Confirm compatibility with face-shield brackets and visors
  • Ensure secure fit during bending, climbing, walking, and equipment operation
  • Verify upward and peripheral vision through the required range of movement
  • Do not force the glasses over prescription eyewear unless the combination has been evaluated
Hazard Assessment Guidance

The employer should identify the source, direction, frequency, duration, and severity of each eye hazard before selecting protective eyewear. Spectacle-style protection may be suitable for general impact and particle hazards but may not provide sufficient enclosure for chemical splash, fine dust, aerosols, or multidirectional exposure.

Hazard Selection Consideration
Flying particles and general impact Confirm that Z87+ spectacle-style protection provides adequate coverage for the identified hazard
Chemical splash Use chemical-splash goggles or another appropriately enclosed protector
Fine dust or aerosol Evaluate goggles or another protector with greater enclosure
Full-face impact or splash Add an appropriate face shield while retaining required primary eye protection
Welding, cutting, or brazing radiation Use task-specific filter lenses with the required shade designation
Laser radiation Use wavelength-specific laser eyewear with verified optical density
Bright sunlight and general glare Blue-mirror lenses may be suitable when task lighting and tint compatibility are confirmed
Directional reflected glare Consider polarized eyewear where directional glare control is required
Controlled Environment Considerations

Safety certification and cleanroom suitability are separate determinations. ANSI impact compliance does not establish sterility, cleanroom classification, low particle release, low outgassing, disinfectant compatibility, or suitability for aseptic processing.

The Nemesis VL 20471 is reusable industrial safety eyewear and is not supplied sterile or represented as cleanroom-certified. The blue-mirror lens may also be unsuitable for controlled areas where high visible-light transmission, color discrimination, inspection accuracy, or low-reflectance eyewear is required.

  • Evaluate the eyewear under the facility’s contamination-control strategy before use
  • Confirm that the mirror tint does not interfere with inspection or color-recognition tasks
  • Assign eyewear by employee or controlled area when practical
  • Handle the glasses by the temples rather than the lens
  • Complete fit adjustments before entering the critical work zone
  • Do not place eyewear directly on benches, carts, gowning seats, or critical surfaces
  • Do not transfer eyewear between uncontrolled and controlled areas without approved cleaning
  • Use only facility-approved cleaners and compatible low-lint wipes
  • Inspect for haze, residue, mirror damage, coating damage, scratches, and retained contamination
  • Replace the glasses when they no longer meet the facility’s cleanliness or visibility criteria
Cleaning Procedure
  1. Wash and dry hands or don clean gloves as required by the work area.
  2. Inspect the lens for dust, grit, metal particles, dried residue, or abrasive contamination.
  3. Remove loose particles using clean air or a gentle water rinse when permitted.
  4. Apply an approved optical cleaner, mild soap and water, or another validated cleaning solution.
  5. Wipe gently using a soft, non-abrasive optical tissue, microfiber cloth, or approved cleanroom wiper.
  6. Avoid aggressive pressure, repeated polishing, or circular scrubbing of the mirror and anti-fog coatings.
  7. Rinse where required to remove cleaner residue.
  8. Dry using a clean, soft, non-abrasive material.
  9. Inspect the lens, mirror surface, anti-fog coating, temples, mounting points, nosepiece, cord, and safety markings before reuse.

Chemical compatibility note: Strong solvents, aggressive disinfectants, high-pH cleaners, abrasive compounds, and incompatible chemicals may craze polycarbonate, damage the mirror treatment, reduce anti-fog performance, weaken the temple system, or alter optical clarity. Where repeated disinfection is required, validate the exact chemical, concentration, contact time, application method, rinse procedure, and cleaning frequency.

Inspection and Replacement Criteria

Inspect the eyewear before each use and after any impact, chemical exposure, abnormal heat exposure, or cleaning process that may affect protection or optical performance. Remove the glasses from service when any condition could reduce fit, clarity, impact performance, mirror integrity, or anti-fog function.

  • Damaged, missing, or permanently deformed nosepiece
  • Loss of secure fit during normal movement
  • Illegible required safety markings
  • Exposure to a significant impact event
  • Chemical contact that may have degraded the lens or frame components
  • Residue that cannot be removed using the approved cleaning process
Storage and Handling

Store the glasses in a cool, clean, and dry location away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, abrasive materials, heavy objects, and chemical vapors. The mirror and anti-fog surfaces should be protected from unnecessary contact during storage and transportation.

  • Use an individual protective case, sleeve, or designated storage compartment
  • Do not store with sharp tools, loose fasteners, metal parts, or abrasive materials
  • Do not place heavy objects on the lens or temples
  • Avoid prolonged storage in hot vehicles or near process heat

It does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions, current product markings, a workplace hazard assessment, exposure-control plan, cleanroom qualification, facility SOP, or regulatory guidance. Verify current certificates, declarations, chemical-compatibility information, and lot-specific documentation when required by the organization’s quality or safety system.

Technical insight: The Nemesis VL 20471 is strongest where blue-mirror brightness reduction, premium anti-fog performance, scratch resistance, lightweight frameless comfort, upward and peripheral visibility, Z87+ impact protection, ultraviolet filtration, and compatibility with hard hats, masks, respirators, or hoods must work together.
