Micronova PEN-50 / IR Cleanroom Sharpie® Ultra Fine Tip Markers — 0.2 mm Tip, Black/Blue/Red, 12 per Bag (Optional Gamma Irradiation)
PEN-50 / IR is an ultra-fine-tip permanent marker option for cleanroom and controlled-environment labeling: sample bags, trays, equipment tags, log sheets, and batch/lot traceability where legible, precise lines matter. Micronova publishes a high-density poly barrel with non-toxic, alcohol-based ink, plus wipe-down durability guidance to support contamination-aware handling and documentation discipline.

SOSCleanroom (SOS) has been a proud distributor of Micronova for over 15 years supporting critical environments. That relationship matters when you are standardizing documentation supplies: it supports continuity of supply, consistent product lineage, and fast access to the manufacturer documentation and lot/packaging traceability your QA/QC team expects.

Published configuration (PEN-50 / IR)
  • SOS SKU: PEN-50 / IR
  • Marker type: Sharpie® capped permanent marker (Ultra Fine Point)
  • Tip size: 0.2 mm Ultra Fine
  • Ink: Non-toxic alcohol-based ink
  • Barrel: High-density poly barrel
  • Ink colors (order option): Black, Blue, Red
  • Available quantity option: Bag
  • Bag unit: 12 markers per bag (manufacturer packaging published as 4 per pack, 3 packs per final packaging)
  • Autoclavable: Not autoclavable
  • (Optional) Gamma irradiated: Orderable option on SOSCleanroom (select when your program requires irradiated documentation tools)
Low particle risk management — and the reality check
These markers are intended for clean and controlled environments, but no marker is “zero particle.” Treat documentation tools like controlled components: keep them bagged until use, control cap-on/cap-off behavior, and prevent barrel abrasion and tip contact with garments, benches, and dirty drawers. Contamination control is driven as much by handling discipline as by the marker itself.

Practical cleanroom use guidance (technicians and engineers)
  • Cap discipline: Keep the marker capped except during active writing. Leaving it uncapped increases dry-out risk and can create ink residue that transfers to gloves or packaging.
  • Write on dry surfaces: Let IPA/DI wipe-downs fully flash off before marking. Wet solvent films are a primary driver of smearing and ink transfer.
  • Glove control: Do not write with solvent-wet gloves. If gloves are wet, change or dry per site practice before labeling critical items.
  • Tip contact control: Avoid touching the tip to benches, garments, or tape rolls. If the tip contacts a non-controlled surface, segregate the marker to non-critical use.
  • Zone segregation: Assign markers to a specific room/zone (ISO 5 core vs. ISO 7/8 support) to reduce cross-contamination and “mystery residue” events.

Compatibility and wipe-down notes
  • IPA / bleach / phenols (barrel wipe-down): Manufacturer publishes the barrel holds up to wipe down with IPA, bleach, and phenols.
  • Strong solvents: Manufacturer publishes the integrity of the printed barrel can be compromised with thinners and strong solvents.
  • Autoclave: Not autoclavable. If your program requires autoclave cycles, standardize a documentation tool explicitly rated for that process.
  • Wipe-down technique: Wipe the capped barrel/cap exterior (not the tip), avoid saturating seams, and allow full dry time before returning the marker to controlled storage.

Common failure modes
  • Smearing / ink transfer: Typically caused by writing on solvent-wet surfaces or handling labels before dry time. Prevent with flash-off and dry-time discipline.
  • Residue carryover: Ink buildup on the tip or cap can transfer to gloves and packaging. Prevent by capping promptly and retiring markers that show tip fouling.
  • Particle shedding from abrasion: Rubbing barrels/caps against drawers, tools, or rough bench edges can generate fines. Prevent with controlled storage and avoiding hard contact/dragging.
  • Static attraction: In low humidity, barrels/caps can attract fines. Prevent by minimizing rubbing against garments and following site ESD/humidity controls.

Storage and handling best practices
  • Keep markers in original packaging until introduced into the controlled area; reseal/open bags with clean handling discipline.
  • Store at ambient temperature (manufacturer recommends 15°C – 30°C) and avoid direct sunlight/UV exposure.
  • Protect from extreme temperature/humidity fluctuations; avoid storage near heat sources that can accelerate dry-out.
  • Maintain lot segregation when required; lot numbers are published as printed on individual bags and cases to support traceability.
