Overview

The RP-4323 is an optional accessory probe set used with resistivity meters such as the Ohm-Stat RT-1000 and RT-500. It is designed for accurate surface resistance / surface resistivity measurements of ESD-control materials and work areas—including floors, work surfaces, mats, paints, and floor finishes.

If you manage electronics manufacturing, assembly, testing, repair, packaging, or any process where static can damage components, reliable measurement tools are the foundation of an effective ESD Control Program.

Why these probes matter for ESD safety
  • Repeatable measurements: Standardized probe weight and contact surfaces help reduce “operator variability” when verifying ESD floors, benches, mats, and coatings.
  • Process protection: Verifying that materials remain in their intended resistance range helps prevent latent ESD damage that can cause intermittent failures later in the field.
  • Audit readiness: Probes support routine verification activities commonly used in ESD programs (periodic checks, troubleshooting, and documentation).
  • Right tool for the job: These are purpose-built electrodes for surface resistance / resistivity testing, not improvised leads or handheld “quick checks.”

Typical applications
  • Resistance testing of ESD floors and floor finishes
  • Work surface and bench mat verification
  • ESD paint and coating qualification / periodic checks
  • Troubleshooting “hot spots” and drift in static-control materials over time

ESD Program Support Surface Resistance / Resistivity 5 lb Probes Cords Sold Separately

ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) is one of the most common hidden causes of electronic component damage. The challenge is that many damaging discharges are not “felt” by the operator, yet they can create latent defects that show up later as intermittent failures.

Strong ESD programs are built on two pillars: control (grounding, materials selection, process discipline) and verification (routine measurements that prove those controls still work). The RP-4323 resistance probes exist for the verification side of the equation.

1) What are you actually measuring?

In most facilities, “ESD safe” is not a single number. Floors, bench mats, coatings, and packaging materials are managed to target resistance ranges so they dissipate charge in a controlled way (not too conductive, not too insulative).

  • Surface resistance: how strongly a material resists current flow across its surface.
  • Surface resistivity: a normalized form of surface resistance used to compare materials more consistently.

Industry test methods (such as STM11.11) define equipment configuration, environmental conditioning, and verification steps to improve repeatability from technician to technician.

2) Why probe design matters (and why “improvised leads” fail audits)

Good measurement tools reduce uncertainty. In ESD verification, uncertainty often comes from inconsistent contact pressure, operator technique, and surface contamination. The RP-4323 is engineered to address those risks with practical features:

  • Two 5 lb probes: Standardized weight helps stabilize contact pressure for more repeatable readings.
  • Insulative paint coating: Designed to avoid alternative conduction paths that can skew results.
  • Conductive rubber contact (50–60 Shore A): Intended to provide consistent electrode contact behavior.
  • Insulative handles: Easier to position without introducing “body influence” into the measurement.

In short: if the measurement is going to support quality decisions, it needs to be performed with tools built for the test—not general-purpose clips and guesswork.

3) Where these probes fit in an ESD Control Program

ESD programs commonly require periodic verification of protective materials and grounding systems. This is how teams catch “drift”—for example, a floor finish that changes electrical performance as it wears, or a bench mat that becomes contaminated and starts measuring out of range.

  • Use probes like RP-4323 to test floors, work surfaces, floor mats, paints, and floor finishes.
  • Trend results over time to support preventative maintenance decisions.
  • Document readings to support training, troubleshooting, and customer/auditor confidence.

4) Practical “best practices” for better readings
  • Clean the test spot: Dirt, residues, and waxes can cause misleading measurements.
  • Be consistent: Use the same probe spacing and test locations each time so your results trend correctly.
  • Condition if required: Some procedures specify temperature/humidity stabilization for reproducibility.
  • Use proper cords: RP-4323 probes ship without cords; use compatible cable sets (example: CC-2641) to avoid unstable connections.

Build a complete verification kit (recommended)
  • RT-1000 — resistivity tester kit for verification workflows.
  • RT-500 — portable resistivity testing.
  • CC-2641 cords — cable set used with test equipment connections.
  • Complete Audit Kits — for teams formalizing ESD verification and documentation.
