Product Summary

The Ushio USH-508SA is a 500W short-arc mercury super high pressure UV lamp designed for UV optical systems that require a compact arc for efficient focusing and stable irradiance. In these systems, the lamp behaves like an optical component: arc position, operating mode, and cooling discipline determine whether UV delivery stays consistent after replacement.

500W Short-Arc Mercury Lamps: The Three Things That Decide UV Performance (Power Mode, Cooling, and Geometry)
1) Power Supply Mode: Constant Power Control

The USH-508SA is specified for constant power control operation. In super high pressure UV systems, this matters because the lamp’s electrical behavior changes as the discharge stabilizes and as the arc gap and electrodes evolve over life. A supply that does not match the required control mode can show up as unstable irradiance, difficult starting, or reduced usable life.

Ushio also specifies a maximum current ripple limit (P-P) for the supply, which reinforces that stability is a system result: lamp + supply + cabling + igniter.

2) Cooling Is Not Optional

Short-arc mercury lamps run extremely hot at the base and bulb. The USH-508SA specification calls out forced cooling as necessary and defines maximum base temperature and a bulb temperature range. If airflow is restricted (filters loaded, ducting changed, fan aging), the lamp can drift, fail early, or create safety risk.

3) Geometry: Arc Gap and Orientation

Optical systems are built around the arc as the source. The USH-508SA specifies a 4 mm cold arc gap and a defined lamp-house position requirement (vertical within tolerance). If a lamp is installed outside its specified orientation window, arc behavior and UV delivery can change, and life can shorten.
