Overview

The Ohm-Stat CM-1700 Guardian™ is a constant monitor that continuously checks an operator’s path-to-ground through a single-wire wrist strap. If the ground path is broken, the CM-1700 signals immediately with a blinking red LED and a loud buzzer. This supports ESD Protected Areas (EPAs) where electronics are assembled, inspected, tested, or reworked—including cleanrooms and controlled environments where low humidity and synthetic materials can increase static risk.

SOSCleanroom helps customers build dependable ESD workstations with clear, audit-friendly product information, compatible accessories, and Auto-Ship options to keep ESD consumables in stock.

Why this monitor matters
  • Immediate failure detection: catches wrist strap / ground path interruptions as they occur (not after product handling).
  • Supports seated EPA best practice: ESD guidance expects seated personnel to be connected to the grounding/equipotential bonding system via a wrist strap system.
  • Field + plant flexibility: listed as suitable for in-plant or field-service work, with AC adaptor or 9V battery power options.
  • Common point grounding behavior (listed): product notes indicate the operator remains connected to earth ground even when the monitor is switched off.

Typical applications
  • Electronics assembly, rework, inspection, and test benches (ESD Protected Areas)
  • Cleanrooms handling electronics, optics, sensors, or devices where static control is required alongside contamination control
  • Calibration labs, QC stations, repair depots, and field service kits
  • Training environments that need highly visible pass/fail grounding feedback

The Technical Vault By SOSCleanroom
ESD Education Personnel Grounding Cleanroom + Electronics Constant Monitoring

ESD is often invisible, but the damage is real

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause immediate failures or create latent (delayed) defects that pass initial tests and fail later. In electronics manufacturing, this is a yield, reliability, and warranty-cost risk. Low humidity can increase ESD severity and static buildup, which is especially relevant in controlled environments and cleanrooms that manage humidity for process reasons.

The most important control at a seated workstation: bond the operator to ground

In an ESD Protected Area (EPA), guidance expects seated personnel to be connected to the selected grounding/equipotential bonding system via a wrist strap system. That is why wrist straps, cords, and verified ground points are treated as core controls — not optional accessories.

What goes wrong in real life
  • Coil cords fatigue or intermittently open during movement.
  • Snaps loosen, or the strap-to-skin interface becomes inconsistent.
  • A “ground point” exists, but the building ground is incorrect or compromised.

Why constant monitors are used

Point-in-time wrist strap tests confirm performance only at the moment of the test. Constant monitors are used when the program objective is to detect loss-of-ground conditions immediately at the point of work. ESD compliance guidance also emphasizes ongoing verification and troubleshooting of ESD control items as part of a mature program.

Where the CM-1700 fits

The Ohm-Stat CM-1700 Guardian™ monitors the operator’s path-to-ground through the single-wire wrist strap. If the ground path is broken, the CM-1700 alerts with a blinking red LED and loud buzzer. Product information also notes that the operator is connected to earth ground even when the on/off switch is off, and that the device functions as a common point ground when switched off.

Why the power options matter

The CM-1700 is listed with AC adaptor capability and 9V battery power. This supports bench installations and practical field-service or temporary setup scenarios.

Implementation checklist (fast and effective)
  1. Verify the building ground first: use a ground checker before you rely on any workstation ground path.
  2. Standardize the strap system: choose approved wrist straps and cords so performance is repeatable across operators and shifts.
  3. Train alarm response: stop handling ESDS items, re-dock, inspect/replace cord or strap, then re-confirm “good” status before resuming work.
  4. Document the configuration: ground point location, strap/cord model, and any calibration/verification evidence should align to your ESD Control Program Plan.

Why buy ESD controls from SOSCleanroom
  • Complete workstation support: monitors, straps, cords, heel grounders, and ground-check tools in one source.
  • Chatbot-readable product data: reduces back-and-forth between Engineering, EHS, QA, and Purchasing.
  • Continuity options: Auto-Ship helps prevent ESD consumables (cords, straps, heel grounders) from becoming production blockers.

Program note

A constant monitor is one control within a broader ESD program. Best results come from verified grounds, controlled configurations, operator training, and periodic compliance verification aligned to your ESD Control Program Plan.
