Tips For Putting On & Removing A Lab Face Mask

1st Jan 2019

Face masks are a common cleanroom item that can be found in medical, commercial, and industrial applications. They are a great tool when it comes to minimizing contaminants and germs in a controlled space, especially if an employee coughs or sneezes. Face masks can be used for a variety of tasks, and they may be labeled with terms like: isolation, dental, medical, surgical, and procedural.

Tips For Putting On A Face Mask

  1. The first thing you’ll want to do before putting on a face mask is to wash your hands with soap and water.
  2. Next, remove the face mask from the box it came in. Inspect the face mask, ensuring there are no tears or holes in it.
  3. Determine which side of the face mask is the top. You can usually figure this out by looking for a stiff bendable edge. This edge is meant to mold to the shape of your nose, and it is considered the top of the mask.
  4. Now you’ll need to figure out which side of the mask is the front. In most cases, face masks will have one colored side, which will be the front. The white side of the mask will touch your face.
  5. Depending on the type of face masks you’re using, the next steps may vary.
  6. If you are using a face mask that features ear loops, you’ll want to connect the ear loops to each ear.
  7. If you’re using a face mask with ties, you should bring the mask to your face and place the ties over the crown of your head, securing the bow on the back of your head.
  8. Gently pinch the stiff edge of the face mask to form around the shape of your nose.
  9. Pull the face mask over your mouth and chin.

Tips For Taking Off A Face Mask

  1. Similar to the first step in putting on a face mask, you’ll want to wash your hands with soap and water before removing it from your face. Try to avoid touching the front of the mask, as it may be contaminated with germs and other particulates.
  2. For ear loop face masks, grip both of the loops gently and lift upwards to remove the mask.
  3. For a face mask with ties, you’ll want to untie the bottom bow before you untie the top bow. As the ties are loosened, gently pull the mask away from your face.
  4. Throw the mask away, and wash your hands again to ensure you haven’t picked up any germs in the process.
