Cleanroom Packaging & ESD-Safe Cushioning: Tray Liners, Mailers and Material Transfer

Protect precision components during in-process handling, storage and transfer while separating contamination-control, cushioning and ESD requirements. Compare CCI KleanStat Flex TPU mailers, airless-bubble rolls and tray liners.

THREE DISTINCT RISKS

Particles, ESD and physical impact

A package that cushions an assembly against impact may still shed particles or accumulate charge. A material marketed for static control may be too abrasive for a polished optic. A package that is easy to clean may not provide discharge shielding when moved outside an ESD Protected Area.

Select based on the complete route: assembly station, internal tote, material airlock, inspection bench, warehouse and shipment. Each transition may introduce a different mix of electrostatic, mechanical, moisture and contamination risks.

Risk Evidence to request Possible failure
Particulate and residue Surface cleanliness, abrasion, outgassing or extractables data Particles or film transferred to product
ESD Low charging, dissipative and shielding evidence as required Charge buildup or direct discharge damage
Mechanical Drop, compression, vibration and fit testing as applicable Cracked or damaged precision parts
Handling Repeatable loading, closure and de-bagging method Touch contamination during transfers

EPA DISTINCTIONS

Why shielding is a different requirement

The EOS/ESD Association identifies low-charging and conductive or dissipative packaging options for appropriate use inside an ESD Protected Area. When an electrostatic-sensitive item leaves that area, the package or system also needs the discharge-shielding performance required by the applicable program.

The published CCI KleanStat Flex catalog describes inherently static-dissipative TPU with controlled-environment applications. This should not be reworded as a verified Faraday-cage or discharge-shielding claim without appropriate manufacturer test evidence.

  • Determine whether the movement remains within a controlled EPA.
  • Confirm the most sensitive device and its handling requirements.
  • Request relevant low-charging, resistance and discharge-shielding test evidence.
  • Document whether an additional certified shielding outer enclosure is necessary.
  • Verify grounding, ionization and handling controls during loading and unloading.

MATERIALS AND DESIGNS

KleanStat Flex TPU forms: flat, bubble, mailer

The SOSCleanroom catalog lists CCI KleanStat Flex TPU in flat-sheet tray liners, molded airless-bubble liners, bubble rolls and mailers. These formats address different handling geometries, but their true suitability depends on the specific part and its contacts.

Flat tray liners

Use where part stabilization and static-dissipative surface contact matter more than cushioning; assess scratch risk and fit.

Airless-bubble tray liners

Add a defined cushioned profile to the tote or tray. Validate compression and movement under actual loads.

Cut-to-fit rolls and mailers

Useful when dimensions vary or transfer requires a protective envelope. Confirm edge handling, closures and route-specific ESD needs.

The catalog includes 0.015-, 0.025- and 0.040-inch constructions for selected products. These are material-thickness choices; greater thickness does not automatically establish a better cleanroom class or ESD performance.

CLEANABILITY

IPA tolerance is not approval for every process

CCI product descriptions state that the KleanStat Flex TPU family can be cleaned with IPA without changing its ESD properties. Treat that as a supplier claim to verify for the exact product and cleaning conditions, not as evidence that all adhesive residues, paints, labels and assembled materials share that resistance.

For reuse programs, define the cleaner, wiper, inspection procedure, drying time, number of allowed cycles and accepted residue limits. Also confirm whether the act of wiping introduces abrasion or transferred contamination.

  1. Assess initial condition and approved material batch.
  2. Perform the actual cleaning and drying operation.
  3. Measure visible changes, residues and relevant electrical properties.
  4. Check cushioning recovery and part fit after repeated use.
  5. Create documented reject criteria for damaged or worn packaging.

TRANSFER WORKFLOW

Protect the component through all handoffs

Define clean-to-less-clean and less-clean-to-clean paths. Packaging that is acceptable at the shipping dock may not belong inside a critical controlled zone. Consider outer bag removal, airlock handling, wiping or decontamination, tray placement, personnel glove changes and reinspection.

Avoid unsupported product-class labels: ISO 14644-1 characterizes airborne room cleanliness; it does not assign an ISO Class 5 certification to an individual bag, tray liner or mailer.

  • Assign a product code for each component and each transfer step.
  • Identify areas where outer shipping materials must be removed.
  • Control contact with critical surfaces and prevent uncontrolled stacking.
  • Separate reusable transport fixtures from disposable packaging when needed.
  • Define traceability and cleanliness acceptance after each transfer stage.

PURCHASING

Compare form factor and lifecycle costs

A precut tray liner may reduce setup time but carry a higher unit price than a cut-to-fit roll. A bubble mailer may simplify internal transfer but be unsuitable for the actual device shielding requirement. Evaluate the complete packaging system rather than one unit-price figure.

Ask for current case quantities, dimensions, thickness, approved uses and manufacturer evidence. Also compare reusable cleaning cycles, damage rates, disposal and operator handling time. The lowest purchase price is not valuable if it produces preventable part damage or unacceptable rework.

PRACTICAL BUYER QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Does static-dissipative TPU provide shielding?

Not necessarily. Discharge shielding is a distinct property to validate for ESDS items traveling outside an EPA.

Are these liners certified for ISO 5?

Do not infer room-class certification from a packaging product listing. Evaluate particle and residue evidence under your process limits.

Can I reuse TPU tray liners?

Only with an approved reuse, cleaning, inspection and electrical-performance verification program.

Can IPA be used on the TPU?

Catalog claims identify IPA cleanability for the KSF material; verify the exact part, method, environmental restrictions and cycles.

Should I buy mailers or tray liners?

Use the geometry and transfer method to decide; include the separate needs for stabilization, cushioning, cleanliness and shielding.

Which is the best thickness?

No universal value. Compare the part dimensions, contact forces, durability and relevant manufacturer test data.
