Dealing With a Spill

• Depending on the size and nature of the spill, some or all of the following steps should be taken.
• Get help. You need to have someone watch over the spill while you check the MSDS and get cleaning supplies.
• Inform the correct person or people about the spill.
• When dealing with a spill, your first priority should be to know what material has been spilled.
• When you have identified the material, check it’s Material Safety Data Sheet for precautionary information.
• Place a chemical spill sign and block off the area with chemical spill tape.
• Spills should be cleaned up using gloves and wipers that will not degrade and leave behind particulates. This is especially important when dealing with volatile materials.
• Blot up as much of the spill as you can using dry wipers.
• Wipe slowly, about one foot per second and wipes, as always from the cleanest to the least clean area of the surface.
• Dispose of used wipers as your industry dictates.
