WHEATON serum bottles: select the glass, capacity, closure, and process together
These WHEATON® serum bottles are molded borosilicate
glass containers identified by DWK for sample storage,
lyophilization, and pharmaceutical-container applications.
The eight variants share a 20 mm crimp finish but differ
in capacity, body dimensions, color, and case quantity.
A complete container system includes more than the
bottle. Select the stopper, aluminum seal, preparation
method, filling conditions, and storage requirements
around the intended contents and application.
Operations takeaway:
USP Type I identifies a glass classification.
Autoclavability identifies a processing capability.
Neither statement, by itself, establishes supplied
sterility, a validated pharmaceutical package,
or compatibility with every formulation.
Glass construction and manufacturer terminology
DWK's current product pages identify the bottles as
molded borosilicate glass conforming to
USP Type I requirements.
The manufacturer-supplied PIM additionally identifies
WHEATON® 400 glass for clear
bottles and WHEATON® 500 glass
for amber bottles.
The PIM material fields use Type 1B terminology,
while the current product pages use Type 1
borosilicate wording. DWK's glass guide distinguishes
ASTM glass classifications from USP classifications.
Do not treat those labels as interchangeable
descriptions of every glass property.
Specification control:
Do not import a 3.3 expansion specification,
volumetric Class A designation, or certificate
from another DWK product family. Obtain the
applicable material documentation when an exact
glass formulation or standard is a procurement requirement.

Closure selection: distinguish the 20 mm finish from the 13 mm opening
| Dimension or feature |
Meaning for selection |
| 20 mm crimp finish |
The manufacturer's nominal neck size for selecting compatible crimp-closure components. |
| 20 mm mouth outside diameter |
The external mouth dimension DWK directs customers to use when selecting a seal and stopper size. |
| 13 mm mouth inside diameter |
The internal aperture; it is not a direction to purchase 13 mm crimp seals. |
| Bottle body diameter |
Varies from 23 to 54 mm and matters for racks, trays, holders, and equipment clearance. |
Confirm the stopper geometry, elastomer, seal style,
and crimping tool as a matched system. A shared
nominal 20 mm size is not enough to establish
compatibility with every stopper construction.
Some specialized stopper designs have additional
neck-geometry requirements.
The bottle records do not identify an included
stopper-and-seal kit. Arrange the closure components
required by the approved process rather than treating
the bottle case as a complete sealed-container system.
Aluminum seal style and sample access
DWK offers different aluminum seal styles.
Open-top seals expose the stopper for syringe
access; tear-off styles permit removal of the
seal; flip-cap styles provide a different access
and tamper-evidence arrangement.
Choose the access method together with the stopper
and intended use. The sealing result depends on
the complete assembly and its qualified application,
not the aluminum seal alone.

Closure-integrity checkpoint:
Define the approved stopper, seal, crimping equipment,
inspection method, and integrity acceptance criteria.
No universal crimp setting, leakage limit, or
repeated-puncture allowance is assigned to these
bottle SKUs here.

Use the color required by the method or storage
specification. Where light protection is critical,
obtain the applicable transmission data and qualify
the actual contents and exposure conditions.
No wavelength cutoff, percentage of UV blocking,
or sample-stability period is established here.
Amber in this listing refers to the 100 mL bottle
only. Do not assume that every clear capacity
has a corresponding amber option on this product page.
Lyophilization: a listed application still requires process qualification
DWK identifies this serum-bottle family as suitable
for many lyophilization applications. That product
positioning does not specify a universal freeze-drying
cycle or establish that every stopper is suitable
for partially stoppered processing.
- Confirm equipment fit: Check the actual bottle diameter, height, tray arrangement, and stoppering clearance.
- Define the fill: Establish the process working volume and required headspace rather than using nominal capacity as the fill instruction.
- Choose the closure: Verify stopper design and compatibility with the bottle neck and processing sequence.
- Qualify the cycle: Validate the formulation, freezing, drying, and final closure process for the selected container.
These checkpoints are facility-selection guidance,
not a manufacturer-prescribed cycle or a guarantee
that all eight sizes behave identically in the
same process.
Autoclavability is not supplied sterility
The manufacturer lists Autoclavable: Yes
for all eight bottle variants. This establishes
the stated capability of the glass bottles,
not the suitability of every selected stopper,
seal, filled formulation, or assembled load.
No supplied-sterile designation, sterility assurance
level, endotoxin limit, or validated depyrogenation
cycle is identified in the reviewed SKU records.
Shrink-wrapped partitioned packaging is not
identified as a sterile barrier.
Processing boundary:
Establish the cleaning, loading, heating, cooling,
closure condition, and acceptance criteria through
an approved procedure. Do not apply an arbitrary
cycle or process a sealed assembly unless that
exact configuration has been approved.
Nominal capacity, equipment fit, and sample compatibility
The stated 5–125 mL values are manufacturer
container capacities. The reviewed records do not
establish calibrated volume tolerances, recommended
working fills, or brimful capacities.
Bottle dimensions change with capacity even though
the crimp finish remains 20 mm. Recheck racks,
trays, labels, sample-handling equipment, and
stoppering arrangements when changing size.
Evaluate compatibility with both the glass and the
selected elastomeric closure. Where relevant,
establish the required extractables, leachables,
adsorption, particulate, and sample-stability data
for the actual formulation and storage period.
USP Type I glass alone does not answer every
container-compatibility question.
Packaging, receiving, and inspection
DWK describes shrink-wrapped partitioned modules
designed to reduce breakage. Case quantities
are 288 for the listed clear 5, 10, 20, 30,
and 50 mL variants, and 144 for the listed
clear 100 mL, clear 125 mL, and amber 100 mL variants.
- Verify identity: Match the received catalog number, color, capacity, and quantity to the order.
- Inspect the package: Investigate damaged cartons, disturbed wrapping, and evidence of broken glass before releasing the material.
- Inspect the bottle: Check the neck and sealing land as well as the body and base.
- Control accessories: Maintain the approved stopper, seal, and crimp-tool configuration.
- Maintain records: Capture received identification, preparation status, and any required manufacturer documentation under the facility's quality system.
The manufacturer's item setup records list
room-temperature shipping and storage for the
supplied empty bottles. This does not establish
the stability period or storage temperature of
a filled sample.
Important use limitations
These bottle records do not establish a working-pressure
rating, centrifuge rating, universal cryogenic-use
qualification, or complete transport-packaging approval.
Do not transfer leak-test or temperature claims
from another WHEATON bottle family.
For sterile manufacturing or injectable-product use,
qualify the container, closure system, preparation,
filling process, and required documentation.
The manufacturer's application description is
not a substitute for that qualification.
Technical FAQs
Do all eight bottles use the same nominal closure size?
Yes. Every listed bottle has a 20 mm crimp
finish and 20 mm mouth outside diameter.
Confirm the specific stopper and seal geometry.
Should I order a 13 mm seal because the opening is 13 mm?
No. The 13 mm value is the internal mouth
diameter. The manufacturer identifies the
closure finish as 20 mm crimp.
Are stoppers and aluminum seals included?
The reviewed manufacturer records identify
bottle SKUs and do not specify an included
stopper-and-seal assembly. Select and arrange
the required closure components separately.
Are these bottles supplied sterile?
A supplied-sterile designation is not established
by the reviewed records. Autoclavable glass
is not the same as a supplied sterile product.
Is amber available in every size on this page?
No. This listing includes seven clear capacities
and one amber option: 100 mL, catalog 223766.
Does every case contain the same number of bottles?
No. The listed clear 5–50 mL options contain
288 bottles per case. Clear 100 mL, clear
125 mL, and amber 100 mL contain 144 per case.

Technical insight:
A common crimp size simplifies initial selection,
but the bottle, stopper, seal, contents, and
processing conditions still require qualification
as a complete system.
