KIMBLE® KIMAX® 45240-100 Oil Centrifuge Tube - 8 Inch, 100 mL, Standard Graduations, 12/Case

KIMBLE® KIMAX® 45240-100 Oil Centrifuge Tubes from DWK Life Sciences are 100 mL graduated borosilicate glass centrifuge tubes designed for petroleum laboratory procedures involving the separation and measurement of water, sediment, and other materials in oil samples. The specialized 8-inch tube geometry supports method-defined centrifugation and reading of separated liquid or sediment layers.

Manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3, each tube measures 203 mm in length with a 37 mm outside diameter. The tube is calibrated to contain (TC) and features durable white ceramic enamel graduations and legend, with finer scale intervals near the bottom of the tube for reading smaller separated volumes.

DWK references this tube family for petroleum testing methods including ASTM D4007, ASTM D1796, and API MPMS Chapter 10.4, as well as additional methods associated with lubricating oils and petroleum products. Suitability for any specific test depends on the current method's apparatus, dimensional, calibration, and procedural requirements.

The manufacturer specifies a maximum relative centrifugal force (RCF) of 800 × g. The tube mouth is tooled to accept a size 6 snap cap, KIMBLE 28150R-6, when separately selected. The manufacturer package contains 12 tubes per case, with a shelf pack quantity of 6.

Ordering note: Catalog 45240-100 is the standard 100 mL graduated oil centrifuge tube supplied 12 per manufacturer case. The separate 45240LF-100 model features Lazer-Fused™ graduations. The compatible size 6 snap cap, 28150R-6, is a separately selected accessory; its inclusion is not established in the tube-only listing. Always observe the 800 × g maximum RCF.

Why the Graduation Scale Matters

Petroleum centrifuge testing often requires measurement of a relatively small separated water or sediment layer beneath a larger oil sample. The KIMAX oil centrifuge tube therefore uses progressively changing graduation intervals rather than a uniform scale.

Its smallest marked intervals are 0.05 mL from 0 to 0.5 mL, increasing through the scale to 25 mL increments from 25 to 100 mL. DWK also publishes separate volumetric tolerances for different volume ranges. A graduation interval is not the same as a tolerance or measurement uncertainty.

Measurement distinction: This product is calibrated to contain, not calibrated to deliver. Read the separated contents as prescribed by the analytical method. Do not treat the tube as a general dispensing pipette or assume that its volumetric tolerances are uniform across the full 100 mL scale.

  • Snap Cap: The tube is designed to accept a size 6 snap cap, manufacturer part 28150R-6; select separately.
  • TC vs. TD: The tube is calibrated to contain liquid, not to deliver a calibrated volume after pouring.
  • 800 RCF vs. RPM: The maximum rated force is 800 × g. The corresponding centrifuge speed varies with rotor radius.
  • ASTM Method Selection: A manufacturer's method reference is not a substitute for validating the complete apparatus against the applicable method edition.
  • Case vs. Shelf Pack: The manufacturer lists 12 tubes per case and 6 per shelf pack. Smaller sales units require SOSCleanroom confirmation.
Important Centrifugation & Petroleum-Testing Considerations

The maximum RCF is 800 × g, based on the manufacturer product specification. RCF is a function of rotor radius and rotational speed; the tube must not be assigned a universal RPM limit without the actual centrifuge geometry.

Petroleum solvents, sample vapors, centrifuge heating, and chemical exposure introduce hazards that require method-specific handling. The tube's maximum RCF rating does not certify a particular centrifuge, seal, or solvent system as safe.

DWK's reference to ASTM D4007 and other test standards establishes the tube's intended method context, not independent certification that any particular laboratory procedure is compliant. The laboratory must follow the current required standard, including all apparatus and quality-control specifications.

The reviewed manufacturer listing does not establish supplied sterility, pressure resistance, a specific cap-included configuration, a validated autoclave cycle, or a lot-specific volumetric calibration certificate.

KIMBLE 45240-100: specialized graduated glassware for petroleum centrifuge testing

The KIMBLE® KIMAX® 45240-100 is a standard graduated 8-inch oil centrifuge tube manufactured by DWK Life Sciences from borosilicate glass 3.3. It is intended for petroleum analysis and other specified procedures involving centrifugal separation and volumetric reading of material collected within the tube.

The manufacturer lists a 100 mL capacity, 203 mm length, 37 mm outside diameter, and maximum relative centrifugal force of 800 × g. The scale and legend are made from durable white ceramic enamel, and the tube is calibrated to contain.

The tube's graduation intervals and volumetric tolerances change across the measurement range. Fine increments at small volumes are particularly relevant when measuring separated water and sediment in petroleum samples.

Operations takeaway: The critical purchasing and operating controls are the exact 45240-100 standard SKU, 100 mL TC calibration, 37 × 203 mm dimensions, and 800 × g RCF limit. The method, centrifuge, rotor and carrier, and complete sample preparation procedure must also be qualified.

Complete graduation schedule: seven measurement ranges

DWK specifies seven different graduation intervals across the 100 mL tube. The lower portion of the scale uses much finer divisions than the upper portion, allowing smaller separated volumes to be read more closely.

Graduated Range Interval Between Marks
0 to 0.5 mL0.05 mL
0.5 to 2 mL0.1 mL
2 to 3 mL0.2 mL
3 to 5 mL0.5 mL
5 to 10 mL1 mL
10 to 25 mL5 mL
25 to 100 mL25 mL

These values are the manufacturer's graduation intervals, not the tube's allowable volumetric errors. The applicable error limits are provided separately below.

Measurement checkpoint: A 0.05 mL marked interval does not imply ±0.05 mL accuracy, a universal detection limit, or certified precision at every point. Interpret the readings with DWK's tolerance bands and the analytical method's requirements.

Complete volumetric tolerance schedule: seven manufacturer bands

DWK provides the following volume-dependent tolerances for 45240-100. The manufacturer uses a separate tolerance schedule from the graduation interval schedule.

Volume Range Manufacturer Tolerance
0 to 0.1 mL±0.02 mL
Above 0.1 to 0.3 mL±0.03 mL
Above 0.3 to 1 mL±0.05 mL
Above 1 to 3 mL±0.10 mL
Above 3 to 5 mL±0.20 mL
Above 5 to 10 mL±0.50 mL
Above 10 to 100 mL±1.00 mL

The published tolerances apply according to the manufacturer's stated bands. They do not establish an individual instrument calibration certificate, a complete measurement uncertainty budget, or a guarantee that every test result meets its analytical method's accuracy requirements.

Specification note: The tolerance ranges and graduation intervals have different breakpoints. Do not combine them into a single simplified scale or apply the ±0.02 mL value across the entire 100 mL volume.

Calibrated to contain (TC) versus calibrated to deliver (TD)

DWK identifies the 45240-100 oil centrifuge tube as calibrated to contain (TC). This designation means the graduations describe the volume contained in the vessel under the applicable calibration conditions.

A device calibrated to deliver (TD) is designed and calibrated around liquid discharged from the vessel, which may account for residual liquid left behind. These are different volumetric calibration concepts and should not be substituted.

  • TC: Volume held in the tube at the indicated graduation.
  • TD: Volume delivered from a device calibrated for discharge.
  • 45240-100 Designation: TC.
  • Scale Reading: Follow the applicable petroleum method for the correct sample or interface level.
  • Temperature: Use the method's specified conditions and any calibration-temperature requirements.
  • Transfer Operations: Do not use this tube as a certified delivery instrument without independent qualification.

Calibration boundary: A TC marking and manufacturer tolerance table do not prove that an individually supplied tube includes a serialized calibration certificate or traceability document. Request documentation when required by a quality system.

Petroleum testing applications and manufacturer method references

DWK describes KIMAX oil centrifuge tubes for water-and-sediment determinations in petroleum materials and for additional tests on lubricating oils and hydrocarbon liquids. The manufacturer's listing references multiple ASTM and API methods.

Method Reference Manufacturer-Described Context
ASTM D4007 Oil centrifuge tube referenced for laboratory water-and-sediment testing in crude oil
ASTM D1796 Water-and-sediment testing associated with fuel oils and petroleum products
API MPMS 10.4 Manufacturer-referenced petroleum water-and-sediment measurement procedures
ASTM D91 and D128 Manufacturer-referenced lubricating oil and precipitation testing applications
ASTM D1093 Manufacturer-referenced acidity testing involving certain petroleum-related liquids

These references identify manufacturer-described application contexts. They do not establish that a tube, centrifuge, and laboratory procedure automatically conform to the current revision of every listed method.

Regulated testing checkpoint: Before purchasing for an ASTM or API procedure, confirm the current method's required tube design, calibration, centrifuge equipment, sample handling, reagent system, temperature, and acceptance criteria. A method reference is not a product certification.

Water-and-sediment separation: understanding the measured layers

Centrifugation is used in certain petroleum analytical methods to accelerate the separation of components with different physical properties. After the prescribed centrifugation process, separated water and sediment may collect in a lower portion of the tube where they can be read against the graduated scale.

The reading depends on the sample, applicable method, solvent or demulsification process, temperature, centrifugation conditions, and the stability and visibility of the separated layers.

  • Sample Preparation: Follow the approved method for mixing and any reagent additions.
  • Tube Filling: Use the specified liquid quantities and handling approach.
  • Centrifugation: Apply the required conditions without exceeding the tube's RCF limit.
  • Layer Formation: Allow the expected material separation under method-defined conditions.
  • Graduated Reading: Read the specified layer boundaries using the correct scale.
  • Reporting: Calculate and document the result as the governing method requires.
  • Quality Control: Apply method-specific repeatability, acceptance, and corrective-action requirements.

The 100 mL nominal tube capacity does not establish a universal direct conversion between any measured separated layer and a percent-by-volume result. The sample volume, dilution, and prescribed calculation must be considered.

Maximum 800 × g RCF: why it must not be confused with RPM

DWK specifies the maximum relative centrifugal force for the 45240-100 as 800 × g. Relative centrifugal force describes the acceleration imposed on a sample relative to standard gravitational acceleration.

Rotational speed, expressed in RPM, is different. A centrifuge's actual RCF depends on both RPM and the distance from its rotation axis to the point being evaluated. Two different rotor geometries can generate different RCF values at the same RPM.

General centrifuge relationship:

RCF (× g) = 1.118 × 10-6 × radius (mm) × RPM2

  • RCF: Relative centrifugal force expressed as multiples of gravity.
  • Radius: Effective rotation radius, in millimeters, for the point being evaluated.
  • RPM: Rotational speed of the centrifuge.
  • Tube Limit: Maximum 800 × g for 45240-100.
  • Rotor Limit: Also subject to the centrifuge and carrier manufacturer's specifications.
  • Weakest Component: Operate within the lowest applicable safe limit of the tube and complete assembly.

DWK's glass technical guidance specifies evaluating the force at the tube base because that location experiences the maximum RCF. The manufacturer also warns that damaged glass centrifuge tubes can have significantly reduced mechanical strength.

Critical safety limit: 800 × g does not mean 800 RPM. Determine the correct speed using the actual centrifuge's radius and instructions. Never exceed the lower of the tube's maximum RCF or the safe operating limits of the rotor, carrier, closure, or other relevant components.

Review DWK's Centrifuge Tube RCF Guidance

Centrifuge rotor and tube-carrier compatibility

The published 37 mm outside diameter and 203 mm length help laboratories evaluate whether the tube can be safely supported in an appropriate centrifuge.

However, matching the outside diameter and length alone is insufficient. The tube's lower geometry, carrier shape, cushioning, center of gravity, tube clearance, and intended centrifugation conditions all influence compatibility.

  • Tube OD: 37 mm.
  • Tube Length: 203 mm.
  • Rotor or Bucket: Must be approved for the actual glass tube configuration.
  • Tube Support: Use an appropriate carrier, insert, or cushion as specified by the centrifuge manufacturer.
  • Rotor Clearance: Confirm safe operation without contact, interference, or unapproved tube positioning.
  • Balancing: Follow the centrifuge manufacturer's sample-loading and balancing procedures.
  • RCF: Do not exceed 800 × g.
  • Glass Condition: Only use intact tubes free from scratches, chips, and cracks.

Equipment qualification: No universal centrifuge make, model, or rotor part number is approved by the reviewed 45240-100 listing. Verify the exact tube and equipment combination before use.

Snap-cap selection: size 6 and KIMBLE 28150R-6

DWK specifies that the top of the tube is tooled to accept snap cap 28150R-6 and lists the snap-cap size as 6.

The tube's formed mouth and the manufacturer's specified cap identify a compatible closure option, but the current tube specification does not establish that a cap is included in the manufacturer case.

  • Tube SKU: 45240-100.
  • Snap Cap Size: 6.
  • Identified Cap: 28150R-6.
  • Closure Included: Not established by the reviewed tube-only listing.
  • Cap Material: Confirm with manufacturer documentation for the actual cap SKU.
  • Petroleum Compatibility: Evaluate the cap separately against sample liquids and test solvents.
  • Centrifugation: Verify the approved closure setup under the centrifuge and analytical method requirements.

Accessory distinction: A cap designed to fit the tube is not necessarily a pressure-rated, vapor-tight, or universally centrifuge-approved closure. Treat cap retention, chemical compatibility, and operating safety as separate qualification requirements.

45240-100 standard versus 45240LF-100 Lazer-Fused™

DWK offers two catalog numbers within this 100 mL oil centrifuge tube family. The primary distinction in the manufacturer's descriptions is the graduation marking technology.

The manufacturer's Lazer-Fused™ description applies specifically to 45240LF-100. Although the dimensional and published tolerance data match in current listings, these are different manufacturer SKUs and should remain separate BigCommerce products.

Selection checkpoint: Do not attribute Lazer-Fused™ scale durability or proprietary marking performance to the standard 45240-100. Choose the exact version required by the laboratory's purchasing specification.

Borosilicate glass 3.3: material behavior and chemical limitations

DWK confirms borosilicate glass 3.3 for the 45240-100. This material is widely used for laboratory equipment because of its relatively low thermal expansion, chemical durability, and resistance to many aqueous and organic substances.

DWK's technical guidance also identifies important limitations. Hydrofluoric acid, hot concentrated phosphoric acid, and strong alkaline solutions can attack borosilicate glass. The material designation alone does not establish unlimited resistance to every petroleum solvent, cleaning formulation, or high-temperature process.

  • Confirmed Material: Borosilicate glass 3.3.
  • Typical Strengths: Low thermal expansion and broad laboratory chemical durability.
  • Hydrofluoric Acid: Incompatible with silica-based glass.
  • Hot Concentrated Phosphoric Acid: Can attack glass.
  • Strong Alkaline Solutions: Can cause chemical attack, particularly at elevated temperatures.
  • Petroleum Samples: Evaluate the full reagent and processing environment.
  • Mechanical Stress: Glass strength is affected by scratches, impacts, and thermal damage.
  • RCF Limitation: The rated 800 × g remains applicable even when the glass is chemically suitable.

Qualification boundary: General borosilicate 3.3 material properties are not a finished-product pressure rating, validated thermal cycle, or permission to exceed the manufacturer's centrifugation limit.

Review DWK Glass Types & Properties

Petroleum sample and centrifuge safety considerations

Petroleum samples and method reagents may present flammability, toxicity, vapor, skin-contact, and environmental hazards. Some centrifuge methods also involve heating, solvents, or special rotor arrangements. The laboratory must evaluate the complete operating procedure and equipment.

  • Flammable Materials: Follow the selected method's equipment and ignition-control precautions.
  • Sample Vapors: Use the ventilation and containment measures required for the petroleum material.
  • Glass Breakage: Do not centrifuge visibly damaged or scratched tubes.
  • Rotor Balance: Follow the required loading configuration.
  • Cap Retention: Do not assume a snap cap is suitable for all centrifugation or vapor exposure conditions.
  • RCF: Do not exceed 800 × g.
  • Centrifuge Equipment: Confirm the rotor and accessories are suitable for the actual sample and operating method.
  • Glass Disposal: Use appropriate laboratory broken-glass disposal procedures.
  • Spill Response: Follow the facility's petroleum sample and solvent cleanup procedures.

Safety priority: An intact tube, properly matched centrifuge carrier, controlled sample chemistry, and verified RCF are all necessary. Manufacturer tolerance data do not override safe centrifugation and hazardous-material handling procedures.

Cleaning, residue removal, and care of ceramic enamel graduations

Laboratory glassware used for petroleum analysis may require removal of oils, residues, and any method-specific reagents. Cleaning should preserve both the glass and its white ceramic enamel markings.

DWK recommends inspecting glassware before use and avoiding cleaning tools that can scratch or weaken the glass. The appropriate cleaning solvent should be selected according to the actual sample contamination and laboratory safety procedure.

  • Initial Inspection: Examine the body, tube mouth, lower graduated region, and white enamel scale.
  • Residue Removal: Use an approved glass-compatible solvent or cleaning agent.
  • Avoid Abrasives: Do not use hard implements or wire brushes that could score glass.
  • Rinsing: Follow the method's specified sequence to remove cleaning residues.
  • Drying: Use a procedure appropriate for the glass and any required analytical cleanliness.
  • Scale Readability: Inspect the enamel marks for damage or loss of legibility.
  • Post-Cleaning Inspection: Reject glassware with cracks, chips, scratching, or other defects.
  • Requalification: Apply the laboratory's measurement and equipment-control procedures where necessary.

No SKU-specific validated cleaning solvent sequence, maximum cleaning temperature, or guaranteed lifetime for the graduated scale is established in the reviewed product record.

Cleaning caution: Petroleum residues and cleaning solvents can present chemical hazards even after testing. Avoid damaging the scale or the glass while cleaning, and discard tubes that no longer meet the laboratory's inspection requirements.

DWK specifies ±0.02 mL for the 0 to 0.1 mL range. Different tolerances apply above that range.

What does calibrated to contain mean?

The scale represents volume held in the tube under the applicable calibration conditions. It is not a calibrated-to-deliver device.

Is the scale printed in white?

The manufacturer describes the scale and legend as durable white ceramic enamel.

Does 45240-100 use Lazer-Fused™ markings?

No. The Lazer-Fused™ version is the separately cataloged 45240LF-100.

Does this tube work with ASTM D4007?

DWK references ASTM D4007 for the product family. The laboratory must verify that the actual tube, centrifuge, procedure, and required method edition meet all applicable requirements.

Does it work for other petroleum methods?

DWK also references ASTM D1796, D91, D128, D1093, and API MPMS Chapter 10.4 in the product description. Review each method's current requirements before use.

What snap cap fits?

DWK identifies size 6 snap cap 28150R-6. Its inclusion with the tube case is not established, so it should be sourced separately if required.

Is the tube compatible with every centrifuge?

No. The laboratory must verify carrier fit, tube geometry, balancing, and centrifuge ratings for the actual equipment.

Are the tubes individually certified?

The reviewed manufacturer listing provides volumetric tolerances but does not establish an individual serialized calibration certificate as included.

How many tubes are in a shelf pack?

The manufacturer lists a shelf pack quantity of 6.

How many tubes come in a case?

The manufacturer case contains 12 oil centrifuge tubes.

Does the product arrive sterile?

The reviewed manufacturer information does not establish a supplied-sterile designation.

Can a scratched glass tube still be centrifuged?

No. DWK warns that scratches, chips, and abrasions significantly weaken glass centrifuge tubes. Remove damaged tubes from service.
